As per media reports, dated August 22, 2020, the Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander Gajanand Yadava, a Parachute Jump Instructor and member of IAF Skydiving Team ‘Akash Ganga’, has been awarded the ‘Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2019’ in ‘air adventure’ category. Yadava has undertaken more than 2,900 jumps till date.
Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award
Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards are the highest national awards for adventure sports in India, conferred annually in four categories—land adventure, air adventure, water adventure, and lifetime achievement—to recognise achievements of people in the field of adventure on land, sea, and air. The awardees are presented with statuettes, certificates and cash prize worth Rs. 5 lakh each.
The selection for the award is made on the recommendations of the National Selection Committee, chaired by Secretary (youth affairs), and comprising of experts from the field of adventure as members. The award is named after Nepali-Indian Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay, one of the first two individuals known to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. Tenzing achieved this remarkable feat accompanied by Edmund Hillary.
