On August 10, 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, through video conferencing, inaugurated submarine optical fibre cable (OFC) in a bid to enhance connectivity between Chennai and Port Blair and 12 more islands in the region as a measure to give a major boost to the local economy and tourism among other sectors. The foundation stone for the project was laid by PM Modi on December 30, 2018, at Port Blair.

The Indian Ocean had been the centre of India’s trade and strategic prowess for centuries. And now when India had adopted the new Act-East policy, the importance of Andaman and Nicobar had enhanced further.

In the near future, government wants to develop Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a hub of Port Led Development by virtue of being located at a very competitive distance from many ports of the world. As a result, India strengthened its network of waterways and ports so as to establish itself as an important player in the global supply and value chain. This would also help foster strong relations with East Asian countries and other countries associated with the sea.

According to PM, laying of cables for about 2,300 kilometres within the sea was wrought with challenges. Surveying in the deep sea, keeping the quality maintenance of the cable, and laying the cable through special ships was a daunting task in itself.

With this new OFC in place, thousands of families in Andaman-Nicobar would now get access to online classes, tourism, banking, shopping, and telemedicine. Even tourists visiting the islands would greatly benefit from the facility as the better net connectivity is a must for any tourist destination today.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are also home to India’s only tri-services command, the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), which has become strategically important amid the Chinese aggression in the region. This new Submarine Optical fibre Cable in the islands would now ensure high-speed broadband connectivity, fast and reliable mobile and landline telecom services, and delivery of e-governance platforms to the islands, all considered strategic for India’s security.
