On August 20, 2020, the Union Cabinet approved a proposal for leasing out airports at Jaipur, Guwahati, and Thiruvananthapuram through public-private partnership (PPP) for a period of 50 years. A competitive bidding process in this regard began in February 2019 when Adani Enterprises won the rights to run six airports—Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Mangalore, Jaipur, Guwahati, and Thiruvananthapuram.
In July 2019, the Union Cabinet had approved the proposal for leasing out Ahmedabad, Mangalore, and Lucknow airports to Adani Enterprises. In August 2020, leasing of the remaining 3 airports was also approved. However, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is not giving these airports to private operators permanently. After the completion, of 50 years, they will be handed back to the AAI.
The amount received by the AAI from the private operator for leasing the airports will be used to develop airports in smaller cities and passengers get good services.
