As per media reports, dated August 25, 2020, the Assam government inaugurated a 1.8-km ropeway across the Brahmaputra river, and described it as India’s longest river ropeway. Built at the cost of Rs. 56 crores, the ropeway extends from Central to Northern Guwahati, and takes eight minutes to traverse the entire length of the ropeway. It comprises of two cabins, each with a capacity of 30 passengers. It passes over the mid-river Peacock Island, which houses a medieval Shiva temple, Umananda.

Background

On daily basis, thousands of commuters travel between the capital city of Guwahati and the town of North Guwahati, where IIT Guwahati is located. Besides, other travel options between the two banks are—

(i) Ferry, which takes 30 minutes or more, depending on current and season, and

(ii) Through a bridge that usually takes over an hour in the traffic.

Therefore, the need for a rapid and safe means of transport necessitated this ropeway.

Significance of the Tramways

The tramways will prove to be significant in the following ways:

  1. Aerial Tramway systems in India is one of the most advanced and longest river crossing, which is particularly well-suited in extreme terrain since the towers can be erected at larger intervals.
  2. It will provide a breathtaking view of the Brahmaputra river and promote tourism in the state besides substantially reducing travel time.
  3. It will carry tourists to North Guwahati, where they can spend quality time. There will be developed hospitality services on that side, which will give a boost to tourism in the city.
  4. It is regarded as a convenient and non-polluting means of transport, as well as a source of environment-friendly tourism.
  5. Ecologically sustainable, it is run by electric power, protecting the beauty of the area, and providing passengers with a comfortable and speedy means of travel.
