Louise Elisabeth Gluck, an American poet and essayist born in 1943, has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for the year 2020, “for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal”. The prize was announced on October 8, 2020 by the Swedish Academy.
This prize is one of the highest honours, awarded annually by the Swedish Academy, to the authors who make extraordinary contributions in the field of literature. Since the induction of this award in 1901, only 16 female candidates, including Louise, have received this honour.
Louise has also won various other literary awards including two Pulitzer Prizes. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for her poetry collections, namely, ‘The Wild Iris’ (1993) and ‘The Seven Ages’ (2002) and several other accolades, including the National Humanities Medal, National Book Award, National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Bollingen Prize.
