In order to reach victims or patients in no time, the Bike Ambulance Service, also known as the 108 service, was launched in Shimla in April 2018. The Bike Ambulances can access areas inaccessible to four-wheeled ambulances due to traffic snarls on roads that are narrow and winding. However, bikes manoeuvre much faster and reach the spot of emergency in good time.

For this purpose, emergency medical technicians (EMTs) are trained to deal with every medical situation—from injury in an accident to severe chest pain and loss of breath, snake bite, or even pregnancy, etc. These EMTs work under the First Responder Bike (FRB) ambulance service. On reaching the spot, EMTs call the emergency response centre physician (ERCP), who is available on 24×7 basis and gives advice to EMTs. EMTs are stationed at what are called hotspots to rush within a radius of 20 km. If a four-wheeled ambulance is required, the paramedic instructs on the kind of stretcher required.

Equipment with EMTs

The saviours on bikes are equipped with a life-saving kit with pre-hospital care utilities needed for stabilising the condition of the patient. These include life-saving drugs, IV fluids and injections, a small oxygen cylinder, a blood pressure checking apparatus, a sugar testing kit, a pulse oxymeter, and nebuliser. EMTs are also trained to provide artificial ventilation and resuscitation.

A Few Cases Dealt with by EMTs

  1. Dharam Prakash, an EMT, received an emergency call in 2018, when a 75 year-old women had fainted in Shimla. He rushed to the address given by the caller. He found the woman’s glucose level had dropped considerably. He called the ERCP and on receiving instruction gave her the required treatment, after which the woman regained consciousness.
  2. A 42-year-old man was put on a drip right on the road! He had vomited several times and was about to lose consciousness as his blood pressure was dropping too. Prakash immediately gave him an anti-vomiting injection and then put him on a drip. This timely medical attention saved the man’s life. He was later taken to the hosipital in a four-wheeled ambulance.

3. Surender Kumar, another EMT, had to face a tough challenge when he was called to help a 30-year-old pregnant woman in labour pain. The woman was at crowning stage and the delivery had to be conducted without wasting a minute. He successfully handled the delivery, thus, saving the life of the mother and the child.
