On August 20, 2018, the Madras High court ordered the Central Board of Secondary Education to announce in media that severe action would be taken against the institutes that fail to comply with the ‘no homework no bag’ rule for class I and II students.

Justice N. Kirubakaran passed the order on a plea by advocate M. Purushothaman seeking direction to the CBSE to follow only NCERT-prescribed syllabus and books.

The CBSE affiliation by-laws make it mandatory for schools to comply with ‘no school bag and no homework’ for the students up to class II.
