On August 18, 2020, Dream11, the free fantasy sports game app won the title sponsorship rights for IPL 2020 for Rs 222 crores, outbidding competitors like Tata Sons, Unacademy, and Byju’s. These rights were up for grabs because Vivo dropped out as title sponsor this year due to the Sino-India border stand-off.
The T20 league is going to start on September 19, 2020, in the UAE. it was due in India but was shifted due to rising Covid-19 cases. Therefore, the BCCI announced a new tender for the IPL title sponsors.
Tata group didn’t place a final bid while two education technology companies came second and third—Byju’s (201 crores) and Unacademy (170 crores)—respectively. Dream11 is also currently the associate partner for the league and it remains unknown whether the company will remain at the position, or BCCI will be looking for a different company to fill the spot.
