The Cabinet Committee on Security, in June 2019, approved the setting up of a new agency, the Defence Space Research Agency (DSRA), to develop sophisticated weapon systems and technologies with the aim of enhancing the capabilities of the armed forces in space warfare.
The task of the agency would be to extend research and development support to the Defence Space Agency (DSA). DSA, which consists of members of the three services, was established to equip the country with capability required to fight wars in the space.
DSRA has started taking shape under a scientist of the joint secretary level. The agency involves a team of scientists to work in close coordination with the tri-services integrated defence staff officers. DSRA, set up in Bengaluru, is under an officer of the rank of an Air Vice Marhshall. Gradually, all space-related capabilities of the three forces will come under its ambit.

In March 2019, India had carried out the Anti-satellite Test (ASAT) which demonstrated its capability to shoot down satellites in space. With this, India entered an elite club of four nations with such capability. The test also helped the country to deter its adversaries from attacking Indian satellites in times of war.
The government has created agencies for tackling space and cyber warfare along with a Special Operations Division (SOD) to address the need for special operations required to be carried out both inside and outside the country.
