The government on September 25, 2020 unveiled the first look of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) train, which can attain a top speed of 180 km/hr, three times faster than Delhi Metro trains. Once in operation, it will run on the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut (DGM) corridor and reduce travel time between the two cities to about an hour, with probably also a business class, (one coach per train) with spacious, comfortable, and reclining seats, accessible through a special lounge at the platform-level. Not only this, the passengers will have an ‘aeroplane-like’ experience as coaches will have all modern facilities available inside a passenger aircraft.
The RRTS train would be a stainless-steel body from outside, besides being lightweight and fully air-conditioned. Its design is inspired by Delhi’s iconic Lotus Temple. Each car will consist of six automatic doors, three on each side. However, the business class will have four such doors, two on each side. There will be 30 six-car train sets, each for operating regional rail services on the corridor; and 10 three-car train sets, each for operating local transit services in Meerut. Its rolling stock is being manufactured at Bombardier’s Savli plant, Gujarat. The trains are not only environment friendly, but will also be energy efficient, which will improve quality of life in and around NCR. It will also create economic opportunities as well as reduce congestion, air pollution, carbon footprint, and accidents.
Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Corridor The Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Corridor is 82-km-long and is the first being implemented in India by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). It will take less than an hour, compared to the current 3-4 hours by road. The 17-km priority corridor from Sahibabad to Duhai will be operational in 2023 while the entire corridor will be in operation in 2025.
