It was reported in September 2019 that the Andhra Pradesh government has sanctioned funds and posts for setting up super speciality hospital with a kidney research centre and dialysis unit in Uddanam mandal in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. The region is known for its chronic kidney disease called Uddanam Nephropathy. It is so rampant here that at least one family member in almost 100 villages in Uddanam region has succumbed to the disease.

The disease has affected people in the mandals of Kaviti, Sompeta, Kanchili, Itchapuram, Palasa, and Vajrapukotturu. The place has also been listed as one of the three regions in the world with the highest concentration of chronic kidney disease, after Sri Lanka and Nicaragua.

Despite the fact that 70 per cent of the patients, affected with kidney disease, are from Uddanam, there were only a few dialysis units in the region and there was also a lack of requisite medical facilities required to tackle the disease early. Now, with the recent government order sanctioning funds worth ` 50 crore, there would be a 200-bed super speciality hospital in Palasa at Srikakulam. The hospital will also be equipped with a kidney research centre and dialysis unit.
