Lakshya Sen, an Indian badminton player, won the Canada Open 2023 badminton men’s singles title in July 2023, after beating the People’s Republic of China’s Li Shifeng. As of August 1, 2023, his current ranking has been 11, displacing Kidambi Srikanth, as the highest ranked Indian in men’s singles.

Lakshya Sen was a member of the Indian team that won the bronze medal in February, 2023, at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship. In 2023, despite his resilience, he lost to Li Shifeng, in the men’s singles semi-finals of the US Open Super 300 event. In August 2023, Lakshya Sen retired midway from his Australian Open Badminton Round of 32 match against Kiran George.

Born in Almora, Uttarakhand, Sen has a career record of 220 wins and 91 losses. He was bestowed with the Arjuna Award for badminton in November 2022.

Earlier Achievements

In 2018, Sen defeated the top seeded World Junior No. 1, Kunlavut Vitidsarn, of Thailand to win the gold medal at the Asian Junior Championships in the boys’ singles final. He also won gold in the Summer Youth Olympics in the mixed team event. Sen clinched the bronze medal in the semi-finals of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Junior World Championships after losing to the eventual champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn.

In 2019, Sen won the Belgian International tournament by beating Victor Svendsen of Denmark. Sen grabbed his first BWF Tour title by defeating Yusuke Onodera of Japan in the Dutch Open men’s singles title. He won the men’s singles title in the 2019 Scottish Open in November, with a victory against Ygor Coelho of Brazil.

In 2020, Sen was a part of the Indian team that won the bronze medal at 2020 Badminton Asia Team Championships.

In 2021, he had to settle for a bronze medal after losing to compatriot Srikanth Kidambi in the World Championships semifinals.

In 2022, he defeated the reigning world champion, Loh Kean Yew of Singapore, in the India Open final, and clinched his first Super 500 title. He also won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games in the same year defeating Ng Tze Yong of Malaysia in the final. He was a runner-up at the 2022 All England Open and was also a part of the Indian team that won the 2022 Thomas Cup, beating Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia. Sen was also part of the Indian team that won silver in the mixed team event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
