A mega food park (MFP) was inaugurated by the the Union Minister for Food Processing Industries, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Narendra Singh Tomar at Phagwara in Kapurthala District of Punjab on November 24, 2020. This MFP has been built at a project cost of Rs.107.83 crores and is spread over 55 acres of land. It is expected to benefit 25,000 farmers while creating employment for about 5,000 people.
This MFP is equipped with ware houses for raw materials and finished goods in an area of 3,944 sq m. Its silos can store 20,000 metric tonnes of food grains and the cold storage capacity of the mega food park is 3,000 metric tonnes. The capacity of its individual quick-freezing (IQF) and deep freezer units is 2 MT/hr and 2,000 MT respectively. The MFP has many other food processing facilities.
In India, so far, 37 MFPs have been sanctioned by the Government and 20 of them are already functional.
