On June 28, 2019, Justice K.R. Mohapatra of the Orissa High Court formally flagged off the ‘SHE Team’ at an event, held at Biju Pattnaik Kalyan Mandap of Paralakhemundi, an innovative pilot project. It is launched by Odisha’s Gajapati district police in Paralakhemundi aimed at ensuring the safety and security of young girls and women.

SHE stands for ‘Safety, Health, and Environment’. The project follows the model of Hyderabad ‘SHE Team’. The ‘SHE Team’ of Paralakhemundi is headed by a lady sub-inspector, assisted by four female and three male police personnel as they patrol schools, colleges, other local institutions and public places, areas where young girls and women could be subjected to eve-teasing, stalking, and harassment. ‘SHE Team’ also seeks to curb the harassment of women at workplace and provide them security in areas where they commute for work.

The team aims to teach self-defence and cyberspace safety to young girls and children and it will also visit childcare institutions in order to educate children about the menace of sexual abuse.
