On August 20, 2020, the fifth edition of the Swachh Bharat Survekshan 2020 results was announced and Indore retained its top rank for the fourth consecutive time. Indore was followed by Surat and Navi Mumbai. The results of the annual survey of cleanliness were announced by Minister of State (I/C) for Housing and Urban Affairs during the ‘Swachh Mahotsav’ ceremony. The survey was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2016. It covered a total of 4,242 cities, 62 cantonment boards, and 92 towns on the banks of river Ganga.

India’s Cleanest Cantonment

A cantonment town in Punjab, Jalandhar Cantt, was named as India’s Cleanest Cantonment in the list. It is one of the oldest cantonments in India, the construction of which began after the First Anglo-Sikh War in 1848.

India’s Cleanest Town

Varanasi, the ancient holy town and popularly regarded as the spiritual capital of India was named as India’s cleanest town on the banks of river Ganga in this list.
