As reported on May 5, 2019, the National Health Authority (NHA) set up a unit to promote innovation in order to reduce dependence on imported technologies and make quality health care affordable. The unit is aimed at cultivating a landscape of synergies focused on innovations centred on the Indian healthcare system in order to evolve and deliver better results. The NHA implements the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PM-JAY), the Modi government’s flagship public health insurance scheme.
Benefit of the Unit
The unit consists of a four-member team to sift through applications from start-ups—individuals and organisations—offering cost-effective technologies. Lots of proposals have searched the unit members who will vet them and refer the selected ones to the concerned departments for expert opinion. The proposals are regarding cost-effective machines, gadgets, diagnostic kits, and data privacy technology, etc. Thus, based on the feedback, the NHA will take a call.
Role of the Unit
The unit will focus on efforts in building an ecosystem which will accelerate innovations and facilitate partnership with external stakeholders from this sector. The director general of Medical Technology Association of India (MTaI) has welcomed the move.
